Walking Away (from Diabetes) Groups

Walking Away (WA) is a course designed for members of the public who have been diagnosed as having “pre-diabetes”. Research evidence shows that people with pre-diabetes who make lifestyle changes as recommended in Walking Away reduce their risk of developing Type 2 diabetes by half over the next 5 years.

What is pre-diabetes?

Pre-diabetes is when your blood glucose (sugar) is higher than normal range, but it is not high enough for a diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes. When you have pre-diabetes, the body is still working hard to control blood glucose, but it is not quite achieving normal blood glucose levels. Pre-diabetes is diagnosed when your HbA1c value is between 41 and 49 mmol/mol.

Walking Away

The WA course is 3 hours long. Up to 15 people who have pre-diabetes and their support people will attend. By the end of the 3 hours the aim is for you to have a better understanding of pre-diabetes and the lifestyle changes that will help you “walk away” from a future diagnosis of Type 2 diabetes.
